Extremely Severe Cyclonic Storm ‘Fani’ ravaged the states of Odisha, West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh on the 3rd and 4th of May. With wind speeds reaching up to 205 kmph, heavy rains and flying debris have battered the coastal belt of Eastern India. Cyclone Fani is the worst India has seen in the last two decades,second only to the Odisha super-cyclone of 1999.

More than 15M people have been affected by Fani in varying degrees. Fani has claimed more than 65 lives and has caused financial losses of about 12,000 crores. 500,000+ houses, 1000+ health facilities & 6700+ schools were destroyed/damaged. 14 districts in Odisha were severely impacted- Angul, Balasore, Bhadrak, Cuttack, Dhenkanal, Ganjam, Jagatsinghpur, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Keonjhar, Khordha, Mayurbhanj, Nayagarh & Puri.

Cyclone Fani Disaster Response Fund

As the impact of the disaster unfolds, United Way’s on ground assessment and insights from Sphere India highlight the following areas of support. Our focus will be on vulnerable groups like children, elderly, disabled and women.



Non-Food Items Kit (HDPE tarpaulins, 10 m rope, ground sheet, portable solar lantern, bed sheet, mosquito net, torch, shelter kit comprising of hammer, nails, ropes, cutting plier & iron strings, cooking utensils (2 pots, 4 plates, 4 cups, 4 spoons)
Type of Support : Immediate

Hygiene Kit (Toothbrushes, toothpaste, towels, sanitary pads, nail cutters, mosquito repellent, washing soap, bathing soap, washing powder, buckets and mugs)
Type of Support : Immediate

Portable Solar Lanterns with Mobile charging port (To combat prolonged failure of electricity, can be used for 12 hours per charge)
Type of Support : Immediate

WASH Support (Servicing one family with safe drinking water for a month)
Type of Support : Immediate

Health Camps (5 day medical camp focusing on prevention of epidemics and providing free medical consultations and basic medicines)
Type of Support : Mid-term

Shelter support and Transitional Shelters with toilet (Structurally resilient shelters for a family of 5, constructed using low-cost methods from locally available materials)
Type of Support : Mid-term

Refurbishment of Anganwadis and Schools (including repair and restoration)
Type of Support : Mid-term

Livelihood support (Mobilization of Women Self Help Groups)
Type of Support : Mid-term

Livelihood support (Youth vocational trainings in hands-on jobs – electrician/plumber etc.)
Type of Support : Long-term
